Beekeeping 101

Registration required. Whether you are an experienced beekeeper, a new beekeeper, or in the thinking stage of starting a backyard hive, this workshop will take you through the ins and outs of managing honey bees. Don Shump, owner of the Philadelphia Bee Company and Greensgrow’s own beekeeper, will share his years of experience as an urban apiarist in Philadelphia and walk you through what to expect during a beekeeper’s typical first year. Don will also talk about local resources available to help you succeed. Plenty of time will be allotted for discussion; please be prepared to ask questions. The class will touch base on Bee Biology, Bee Behavior, Hive Management, Swarming, Equipment and Bee Products.

As we become increasingly aware of where our food is coming from, climate change, and honey bee loses more and more people are taking up beekeeping to make their own honey, have pollinators for their gardens, and to offset die offs of honey bee populations in recent years. Find out what the buzz is all about!

PLEASE NOTE: Cancellations within 72 hours of the start of class are nonrefundable or transferable. Workshop refunds and transfers requested earlier than 72 hours before the class start time will be charged a $5.00 processing fee.

Fall Vegetable Gardening Workshop

Registration Required. Farm your city – get back into the garden this fall! Enjoy fresh food from your garden longer with less worries from heat stress, pests and plant diseases. Join Greensgrow staff expert, Ari to learn how to grow a variety of hardy greens and root veggies into the colder months.

Ari will focus on planning a healthy fall vegetable garden and techniques for extending the season. We’ll talk about which veggies to grow, key dates, soil-warming techniques, how to use hoops and row covers, and best practices to help you set up your fall & winter veggies for success. Ari asks all participants to come with a basic layout of their garden and notes on the light it gets so we can tailor these season extension tips to your space.

In addition to demos and instruction, everyone will go home with information on frost and seeding dates, and how planting and harvest timing is affected by cold weather. Don’t miss your chance to turn every season into a growing season!

Ari Rosenberg is a passionate activist working to create a more just society through community action and organizing. She has been growing food for 15 years in both rural and urban environments. She loves teaching a variety of food & gardening workshops, and works behind the scenes keeping Greensgrow going as our Finance & Ops manager. When not growing, cooking, or preserving food, you can find her biking or running around the city. Yes, at Greensgrow, even our Finance & Ops manager is a farmer.

Can’t wait that long? Annie is teaching the same workshop at our Greeensgrow Farms location, September 22nd! Link here.

PLEASE NOTE: Cancellations within 72 hours of the start of class are nonrefundable or transferable. Workshop refunds and transfers requested earlier than 72 hours before the class start time will be charged a $5.00 processing fee.

Annie has farmed and gardened in Philly for nine growing seasons, and is especially interested in seed saving, permaculture design, and building soil health. Backyard gardening during childhood, wwoofing at farms after high school, and learning from the inter-generational wisdom of community gardeners have all nourished her love of growing. In 2010, she helped to establish and manage the Neighborhood Foods farm with Urban Tree Connection in West Philadelphia, growing fruits and vegetables for a farmstand and community supported agriculture program. At the Department of Parks & Recreation, she coordinated the Junior Farmers Program, a youth gardening education program at recreation centers across the city that planted children’s gardens and cultivated ecological and food literacy.
