Papermaking with Plants

Registration Required. Join our expert papermaker Nicole Donnelly to learn how to make paper by hand, start to finish, beginning with plants from Greensgrow Farms! We will learn various terms associated with Western papermaking, how to test plants for good fiber quality, and cover best practices for sustainable plant harvesting and plant-papermaking.

In the autumn and winter, plants go into a period of dormancy. This is a great time to sustainably harvest the fiber of perennial and annual plants for papermaking. We’ll get hands-on making paper from plant material like corn husks and banana palms; come prepared to get your hands wet and pulpy. It is advised that all participants wear a shirt that allows for rolled up sleeves and closed-toe, waterproof shoes. Everyone will leave with a few sheets of their own hand-crafted paper to take home!

Nicole Donnelly is a Philadelphia native and has been making paper for 10 years with a particular focus on local plants, environmental impact, and sustainability. A visual artist and hand papermaker, she opened her creative studio paperTHINKtank in 2013, and has been continuously producing handmade paper, offering classes, and collaborating with artists. She is the President of IAPMA (International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists); a co-organizer of the Hand Papermaking Community Documentation project; and is published in Hand Papermaking magazine and The Legacy Press. She is the founder of paperTHINKtank, a member of the Friends of Dard Hunter, and a board member of The Soapbox: Community Print Shop & Zine Library. While she holds an MFA in painting, she studied hand papermaking with Timothy Barrett at the University of Iowa and fell in love with the process. Her artwork is focused on the environmentally sustainable possibilities and beauty of handmade paper. Images of her artwork are available here: http://nicole-donnelly.com

Papermaking with Plants!

Registration required. Nicole Donnelly, founder of paperTHINKtank will be teaching you the process of making paper by hand, start to finish, beginning with our raw materials: plant waste collected from Greensgrow! We will learn how to process the plant material so they can be transformed into paper pulp, and then learn how to form sheets of handmade paper with a Western style mould and deckle. Beginners and the experienced are both encouraged to participate.

This will be a hands on workshop. Be prepared to get your arms wet! It will be a fun day of experimentation with texture, color, and of course smell. Everyone will make their own sheets of handmade paper from the varieties of plant paper pulp provided to take home. We recommend that you wear water-proof or water resistant shoes, sleeves that can be rolled up, and an apron or smock.
