Although a former galvanized steel plant may not seem a likely site for a farm, when Mary and Tom went searching for property on which to build, old industrial land was what was available.

On a chilly cloudy day in March 1997, Mary Seton Corboy and Tom Sereduk pushed back the broken gates to an abandoned lot in the Kensington section of Philadelphia. Without knowing it, they were firing the opening salvo in the urban agriculture movement.

So... what have we at Greensgrow learned about Urban Agriculture over the past few years?

Well, for one, we learned what was different between rural and urban agriculture...

At Greensgrow we are dedicated to promoting social entrepreneurship through the reuse of land once deemed useless. In the process we are reconnecting city dwellers with rural food producers and promoting the greening of Philadelphia's homes and gardens. Greensgrow's non profit Philadelphia Project brings green ideas to life while Greensgrow Farm Inc brings food and flowers to our neighbors. Together we are building a better, more progressive and sustainable Philadelphia.

Today visitors to the farm are greeted by expansive raised beds of organic soil filled with an ever changing range of heirloom vegetables, a well stocked Farm Stand, our own version of a CSA (City Supported agriculture) and a Nursery that grows and nurtures the highest quality and greatest variety of plants in the City. What can we say? We were and are enthusiastic.

Greensgrow is THE nationally recognized leader in urban farming (don't just take our word for it...) and is open to the public from early spring through Christmas. A small but dedicated staff runs a multifaceted operation, including a nursery, a farm market, and a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, proving that abandoned land is only abandoned if we choose to leave it that way.
