Growing fruit trees, shrubs or vines is rewarding as you watch the tree grow and produce delicious fruit for years.
A perennial plant is a plant that lives for more than two years. Scientifically, woody plants like shrubs and trees are also perennial in their habit. Perennials, especially small flowering plants, grow and bloom over the spring and summer and then die back every autumn and winter, then return in the spring from their root-stock rather than seeding themselves as an annual plant does.
Ground-cover plants can provide dense soil cover, deter weed growth, and prevent soil erosion. They range in height from an inch to four feet. Ground-covers can be woody or herbaceous, clumping or running, evergreen or deciduous. There is a wide variety of colors and textures to choose from.
Grasses are useful in a wide variety of landscapes. They are adaptable and can grow in poorer soils better than many other garden plants. They require little effort to maintain and come in many heights, colors, and textures. Grasses can be used as ground-covers, specimen plants, for erosion control, and as vertical design elements.
A shrub is a horticultural rather than strictly botanical category of woody plant, distinguished from a tree by its multiple stems and lower height, usually less than 15-20 ft tall. A large number of plants can be either shrubs or trees, depending on the growing conditions they experience.
