While searching for a Thai cookbook the other day, I ran across a college textbook: The History of American Political Thought.  Naturally, I dropped whatever else I was doing, plopped down on the floor, and started perusing the split-spined tome, wondering aloud what they teach these days in Poli Sci.  As I read up on the history of constitutional law, I played it against the backdrop of the debates in South Carolina, the meanness of the current political climate, and the John Adams HBO show I had seen recently. What did they really expect us to do with the information in that book? What did I ever do with it? Maybe I’m a slightly more aware voter, but at what cost? Wouldn’t/couldn’t I have learned it all by just picking up the book on my own?

"This has become one of the best parts of my life… I can't express enough how satisfying it is to be organizing with people who are just as committed and dependable and passionate. It is so great to have the support from the Oxfam America staff, and I've been really impressed by their accessibility, competency and friendliness." – Isaac Evans-Frantz, Educator, New York City

Farming and Sustainability Manager

Description
The Farming and Sustainability Manager (FSM) is responsible for the planning, execution and maintenance of the Greensgrow demonstration farm and grounds, including but not limited to NFT hydroponics, container growing, raised beds, and high tunnel cultivation using IPM and intensive production methods . He/she is also responsible for all Greensgrow satellite growing farms insuring appropriate harvesting, planting and general care, including maintaining relationships with program partners and landowners where required.

The FSM is responsible for guiding Greensgrow's sustainability efforts through the development of new ideas and plans that will increase recycling efforts, reduce waste, minimize environmental impact, and decrease our reliance on outside energy sources. This will be done in conjunction with the Farm Manager and Director of Greensgrow Philadelphia Project, to include:
• Work with Farm Manager to select, order and oversee seeding of seasonal transplants for sale at Greensgrow Nursery.
• Work with Farm Manager to develop, schedule, and participate in farm workshops.
• Oversee development of a tour/visitor system that takes advantage of Greensgrow's existing self-guided tour, and also customize tours for specific groups.
• Assist with non-farming related tasks at the discretion of the Farm Manager, including but not limited to customer service, site maintenance, market set-up and take-down, volunteer management, and general farm duties.
• Work with Fresh Food Manager on a consolidated, safe, clean, and working composting program.

We will serve lunch.

Come prepared! Please bring work gloves and dress for dirty work. Some folks will be working outside, others may be inside-so layers are best.
