There are many environmental benefits to installing a green roof; improved air quality, energy conservation, reduction of water runoff, noise reduction and the introduction of green space, biodiversity and wildlife habitat.
This course will be a hands-on introduction to low-tech affordable small green roofs. We will install an extensive to semi-intensive green roof on shipping containers at Greensgrow West that house our new retail space and office. Through the process, participants will learn options for designing & detailing, sourcing materials and plants, cost information, and best practices for construction. Saturday’s program will include a comprehensive green roof primer course with instructor Travis Douglas, and attendees will construct most of the drainage and retention layers. Lunch will be provided.
Travis Douglas is a LEED AP, Certified Green Roof Installer and owner of Future & Sons, a Philadelphia-based building and renovation contractor specializing in sustainable and green design. He has led the design and construction for numerous residential and commercial green roof installations in the Philadelphia area.
Sunday’s program with Travis will focus on best practices for green roof planting and soil media, with a Q&A session on sedum and succulents with David Prendergast from Greensgrow Farms.
Participants can choose to participate on Saturday for $35 (lunch included), Sunday (BYO lunch) $15 or both for $45. The workshop runs both days from 10am–3pm, with different programming each day as described above.
PLEASE NOTE: Cancellations within 72 hours of the start of class are nonrefundable or transferable. Workshop refunds and transfers requested earlier than 72 hours before the class start time will be charged a $5.00 processing fee.
